How impact glass works
An impact window has two layers of glass bonded to a tough plastic interlayer. If debris hits it, the glass may crack but the interlayer holds it in place, keeping wind and rain out of the house. The frame, anchors and install are tested together as a system against large-missile impact and pressure cycles.
Do you need impact windows?
Much of coastal Charleston County falls in a wind-borne debris region, where building code requires glazed openings on new or replaced windows to be protected by impact-rated glass or approved shutters. Requirements depend on your exact location and design wind speed, so we confirm them for your address during the permit process.
Even where they aren't required, many homeowners choose impact windows for peace of mind, security, noise reduction and lower UV fading.
Benefits beyond storms
- No plywood or shutters to install every storm
- Harder to break into than standard glass
- Noticeably quieter rooms near traffic, airports and the beach
- Laminated glass blocks most UV that fades floors and fabrics
- May help with wind mitigation discounts, depending on your insurer
Styles available
Impact glass comes in nearly every style we install: double-hung, casement, picture, sliding and many specialty shapes.
Installed to the tested standard
An impact rating only holds if the window is installed exactly as tested: correct anchors, spacing, embedment and sealant. We follow the manufacturer's approved installation instructions on every opening and document it for your permit inspection.
Common questions
How much do impact windows cost in Charleston?
Expect roughly $1,400 to $3,500 per window installed, depending on size, style and design pressure. A full home commonly runs $25,000 to $60,000.
Will impact windows lower my insurance?
Some insurers offer wind mitigation credits for protected openings. Ask your agent, and we can provide product approvals and permit records.
Do impact windows look different?
They look like regular windows, with slightly deeper frames. Most guests can't tell.
Are impact windows the same as storm windows?
No. Storm windows are an extra pane added over an existing window. Impact windows are complete replacement windows tested for debris and pressure.
