Why replace a picture window
- Fogged insulated glass that blocks the view
- Heat pouring in through old clear glass on west or south walls
- Failed frames and leaking sills under large glass
- An opportunity to go bigger and bring in more light
Glass choices matter most
With this much glass, the coating matters more than the frame. On sun-facing walls we recommend low-E glass with a low solar heat gain coefficient to cut heat and glare while keeping the glass clear. On the coast, laminated impact glass adds storm protection and blocks most UV that fades floors and furniture.
Combination units
Picture windows are often flanked by casements or topped with an awning to add ventilation, or built into a bay or bow window.
Common questions
Are big picture windows energy efficient?
Fixed glass has no moving seals, so it is very airtight. With the right low-E coating, a modern picture window performs far better than older glass.
Can a picture window be impact rated?
Yes. Large impact units are available, though size limits depend on the product and your wind zone.
How much does a picture window cost?
Most range from $900 to $3,500 installed depending on size and glass.
